Chopstick Dinner

When you hear somebody talking about chopsticks and dinner, your mind will fly straight into a red paper lantern lit restaurant, with intriguing wood carvings connecting the poles to the sealing. Where you see almost everybody eating, various mouth-watering foods with chopsticks; The food is deliciously steaming from beautiful, blue painted china, feeling the room with an unmistakable and daunting aroma. Well this is not the case of our story.
Who would think that a simple overnight camp would turn in to a real adventure? Well I didn’t think so either, until this spring, when four boys with a big appetite for adventure, decided to go rafting.
Their plan was to had out in to the wilderness, camp for one night near the river bank, from where they will start rafting. The second day would begin early, because the journey on the river would be around seven hours and on top of that they would have to walk back to the camping site and retrieve the rest of their gear.
All said and done, our four friends set out for the predetermined spot, where they made camp. Tents raised and the backpacks safe from any possible rain, the boys decided to make a fire and prepare some dinner. They were really hungry from the journey to the camp site.
Once the fire was going, all that was left to do was to prepare the food. On the menu for that evening was mash potatoes made from potato powder. To prepare it, you just need to mix the powder with boiling water, stir it until everything becomes a smooth paste, then it is ready to serve and eat. This sounds easy enough, well it would have been, if they wouldn’t have forgot to bring a pot, a spoon a fork or any other tableware. All they had was 2 cups and a small metal bowl, so a little thing like boiling some water and mixing it with some dust, became a real challenge. If they didn’t figure out something, sleep on a empty stomach was the only thing that awaited them. But the situation was far worse then it first seem, because there was no water spring in the area and so for drinking water, they depended on the pot to boil water from the river.
After an inevitable argue, the only option left for the boys was to try to boil water in the small metal bowl. The process would be time consuming, but at least they would not go hungry that night and neither risk dehydration. Three hours later, after they had to start 2 new fires, because the round bowl toppled twice, spilling all the water and putting out the fire, dinner was ready and they had enough drinking water for the next day as well.
Since they had no spoons or forks and it would have taken them to long to carve some out of wood, they decided to go for chopsticks. When everything was done and stomachs full, they said that it was the best chopstick dinner they ever had.
So there you have it, not the typical red paper restaurant dinner. From now on when you here chopsticks, something different will pop up in your mind.
